Jhirna Zone Safari — Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand, India)

What It Is

The Jhirna Zone is one of the popular safari zones in Jim Corbett National Park, known for its year‑round safari access and diverse wildlife. Situated on the southern edge of the reserve, its landscape includes open grasslands (chaurs), dry deciduous forests, and seasonal riverbeds, providing varied habitats that attract tigers, elephants, deer, and many bird species.

The entry point for safaris is Dhela Gate, located about 15–18 km from Ramnagar, the nearest town and transport hub.

Safari Experience

Jeep Safaris

  • Day jeep safaris run twice daily (morning & afternoon), each lasting about 3.5 – 4 hours.

  • A maximum of 30 jeeps per shift are allowed to enter to keep the experience quieter and better for wildlife sightings.

  • Advance booking of permits and jeeps is recommended through the official park portal or approved safari providers.

Wildlife You Might See
Jhirna is known for frequent sightings of:

  • Royal Bengal Tigers

  • Elephants

  • Sloth bears

  • Deer species (sambar, spotted deer)

  • Nilgai (blue bull)

  • Birdlife and reptiles
This diversity of fauna makes Jhirna a rewarding zone for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Nature & Landscape

  • Laldhang Chaur and other grasslands offer excellent chances to spot grazing herbivores.

  • Dry deciduous forests and streams attract wildlife throughout the day.

  • The terrain is less dense than some core zones, which can make sightings easier.

 Accommodation (Optional)

Jhirna Forest Rest House (FRH) provides basic jungle stays inside or near the zone, letting wildlife lovers extend their visit beyond just a safari.

Best Time to Visit

  • Open year‑round, including the monsoon season, unlike many other zones that close during heavy rains.

  • However, safari bookings in July–September may be canceled at short notice if heavy rain makes forest roads unsafe.

  • Wildlife is often most active in the cooler months (October–March) and in early mornings.

 Tips Before You Go

  • Book permits early, as slots fill up quickly, especially in peak season.

  • Morning safaris usually give the best chance for big‑cat sightings.

  • Follow all park and guide safety instructions inside the forest.
